Welwyn St Mary’s Green Group has worked hard to help us become an eco-friendly school with lots of fun and exciting activities throughout the year.
In autumn we went out just before school finished and did a parking survey to see what changes we could make to the car park. We sent a message home to ask the parents to park as safely as possible and if there aren’t any spaces, to find another place to park.
A while later, we decided to hold a competition of recycled art. The winning pieces of art were awarded a prize made of recycled tissue boxes, decorated with stickers and filled with chocolate coins. The artwork was displayed in an exhibition in Welwyn town hall.
During ‘Walk to School week’ we encouraged the school to walk, cycle or scoot to school. If the children lived a distance away, we suggested that they use ‘Park and Stride.’ Lots of classes finished the recording sheet and earned extra playtime.
We spent a couple of lunchtimes going outside with gloves and litter pickers to try and pick up some of the litter around the school. We also went to the nearby park to do the same for the village.
In the summer we held a palm oil free day. We held an assembly with our Year 3 rep to inform the school about how many animals are losing their homes because of people growing oil palm trees. We encouraged people to look at labels and bring in a palm oil free packed lunch.
One of our favourite activities was our trip to Mitsubishi Electric where we learned about renewable energy. We got various pieces of equipment and got to experiment with mini solar panels that charged a fan, a buzzer and a light.
